Church Path
Street guide, Portchester
A narrow footpath leading from Castle Street through the castle gatehouse to St Mary's Church within the castle walls. Church Path follows the ancient route that parishioners have used for centuries to reach their parish church, walking through the imposing medieval gatehouse and into the grassed outer bailey of the castle. Though the path is short, it is one of the most historically significant routes in the village, connecting the everyday life of the community with a place of worship that has been in continuous use since the twelfth century. The walk through the gatehouse, with its massive stone walls and medieval portcullis groove, provides a memorable approach to the church.
