The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

Castle Street

Street guide, Portchester

The oldest street in Portchester, running south from the entrance to Portchester Castle. Castle Street is narrow and lined with a handful of listed buildings and period cottages, some dating back several centuries. The Red Lion pub stands near the top of the street, close to the castle gatehouse. The street retains the feel of a country village lane despite its proximity to the wider built-up area. Visitors walking to the castle pass through here, and parking can be tight on busy weekends and bank holidays when the castle draws crowds. Several of the buildings have been carefully maintained, and the overall character is one of quiet historic charm.
