The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

Postwar Housing Expansion

undefined

After the Second World War, Portchester expanded rapidly from a compact village into a suburban settlement. Large housing estates were built on farmland to the south and west, particularly along Cornaway Lane, in the Wicor area and around White Hart Lane. The population grew several times over as families moved into the new estates. Schools, shops and a community centre were built to serve the expanded settlement. By the 1970s, Portchester had taken on much of its current form.
