The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

D-Day Preparations

undefined

During the Second World War, Portchester and the surrounding area played a role in preparations for the D-Day landings. The harbour and nearby creeks were used for assembling landing craft and supplies. Troops were billeted in the area, and the castle was closed to the public for military use. The proximity of Portsmouth Harbour made the entire Portchester waterfront part of the massive logistical operation that preceded the invasion of Normandy in June 1944.
