St Mary's Church Restored
undefined
St Mary's Church, standing within the castle walls since the twelfth century, underwent a major Victorian restoration in 1888. The work repaired the Norman fabric, restored the font, and improved the interior. The church had been in continuous use as the parish church since the Augustinian canons left for Southwick in the 1140s, making it one of the oldest parish churches in continuous use in Hampshire. The restoration preserved the Romanesque arches and the distinctive flint and stone construction.
