Richard II's Palace Buildings
undefined
Richard II invested heavily in Portchester Castle, adding domestic apartments and a palace range within the inner bailey. The work included a great hall, kitchens, lodgings and improved gatehouses. Richard used the castle as a marshalling point for expeditions to Ireland and as a comfortable residence. The palace buildings, though now ruined, represent the high point of the castle's use as a royal residence. The surviving walls and window openings give a sense of the scale and ambition of Richard's works.
