The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

Norman Keep Constructed

undefined

Henry I ordered the construction of a stone keep in the north-west corner of the Roman fort, creating an inner castle within the older enclosure. The keep was a square tower of three storeys, built of local stone, and it transformed the Roman fort into a functioning medieval castle. An inner bailey was formed by building walls across the corner of the Roman enclosure. The keep survives today and provides views across Portsmouth Harbour from its upper floors.
