Events in Portchester
Community
Portchester has a calendar of events throughout the year, drawing on the village's community spirit and its unique setting around the castle and harbour. Events range from organised fairs and markets to community celebrations, charity fundraisers and activities at the castle run by English Heritage.
Portchester Castle is the focal point for many of the larger events. English Heritage, which manages the castle, organises events throughout the year including historical re-enactments, open-air theatre, guided tours and educational activities for children. Medieval fairs and living history events bring the castle grounds to life with costumed performers, traditional crafts, archery demonstrations and period food. These events draw visitors from across the region and are popular with families. The castle's setting, with its Norman keep and Roman walls overlooking the harbour, provides a dramatic backdrop that few other event venues can match.
The village hosts a Christmas fair and other seasonal markets, usually organised by the community association or local churches. These feature stalls selling crafts, gifts, home-baked goods, preserves and locally made products. They are modest affairs compared with the large Christmas markets in Winchester or Portsmouth, but they have a genuine village atmosphere and are well supported by residents.
The Portchester community centre and village halls host regular events including quiz nights, jumble sales, craft fairs, talks and film screenings. These are the bread and butter of village social life and provide an affordable evening out without leaving the village. Quiz nights at the pubs are another regular fixture and attract competitive teams of locals.
Summer brings outdoor events to the recreation grounds and harbour area. Community picnics, fun runs, charity walks and outdoor games are organised by various groups. The harbour waterfront is used for fishing competitions and sailing events, and the Portchester Sailing Club hosts its own racing programme and social events during the season.
Remembrance Sunday is observed at the village war memorial, with a parade and service attended by residents, veterans, scouts, guides and community representatives. It is one of the most well-attended events of the year and reflects the village's strong sense of community and its connection to the military history of the harbour area.
For larger events and entertainment, Fareham and Portsmouth offer a much wider programme. Fareham's Ferneham Hall (now rebuilt and reopened as a modern arts venue) hosts concerts, comedy, theatre and cinema. Portsmouth has a full range of entertainment venues, from the Kings Theatre in Southsea to the Guildhall in the city centre, which hosts major touring acts and shows. Gunwharf Quays has a cinema, restaurants and a regular programme of outdoor events.
Keeping up with local events in Portchester is best done through community Facebook groups, the notice boards at the community centre and in local shops, and the English Heritage website for castle events. Word of mouth remains effective in a village of this size, and regular visitors to the pub or the local shops will soon hear about anything that is coming up.
