The oldest and most architecturally significant church in Portchester is St Mary's, which stands within the walls of Portchester Castle in a setting that is unique in England. Built around 1133 as the church of an Augustinian priory, St Mary's has served as the parish church of Portchester since the canons moved to Southwick in the 1140s, giving it nearly 900 years of continuous use as a place of worship.

The Norman architecture of St Mary's is largely intact and of high quality. The distinctive round arches, the decorated west front, the sturdy nave columns and a carved font that is one of the finest of its date in Hampshire all survive from the original twelfth-century building. The church was restored in 1888 during the Victorian period, but the work was sympathetic and the Romanesque character was preserved. Services are held regularly, and the church is open to visitors during castle opening hours. English Heritage castle entry charges may apply, though there are sometimes arrangements for those attending services or visiting for prayer.

The setting of St Mary's is extraordinary and deeply atmospheric. It sits within the massive Roman walls of a third-century fort, surrounded by the grassed outer bailey of a medieval castle. Approaching the church through the castle gatehouse, with the Roman bastions towering above and the Norman keep visible in the distance, is an experience unlike visiting any other parish church. The churchyard, within the outer bailey, contains gravestones and memorials dating back several centuries, though it is no longer used for new burials.
