Portchester Castle
undefined, Portchester
The best-preserved Roman fort in northern Europe, with a Norman keep, medieval palace buildings and over 1,700 years of history. Managed by English Heritage. The Roman walls stand almost to their full height on all four sides, enclosing an outer bailey with the parish church of St Mary and an inner bailey containing the keep and Richard II's palace range. The castle overlooks Portsmouth Harbour and is the defining landmark of the village.
