Saxon Shore Fort Garrison

undefined

Portus Adurni served as one of the key forts in the Roman chain of coastal defences known as the Saxon Shore. A military garrison was stationed here to guard the harbour and to intercept raiding parties crossing the Channel. The Roman document Notitia Dignitatum records the fort and its garrison. When Roman authority collapsed in Britain in the early fifth century, the fort was abandoned by its military occupants, though the site continued to be used by the local population.
