The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

English Civil War Siege

undefined

During the English Civil War, Portchester Castle was held by a Royalist garrison. In 1644, Parliamentary forces besieged the castle and forced its surrender. The garrison held out for some time behind the Roman and medieval defences, but without prospect of relief they capitulated. The castle was subsequently used as a prison and store. This was the last time the castle saw active military service as a defensive fortification.
