Supermarkets in Portchester
Food & Drink
Portchester does not have a large supermarket in the village itself. For a full weekly shop, most residents drive to one of the supermarkets in Fareham or the surrounding area. However, the village does have a Co-op convenience store, which covers everyday essentials like bread, milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, ready meals, cleaning products and basic household goods. The Co-op is located on West Street and is within walking distance for much of the village. It is useful for topping up between larger shops and for picking up items you have forgotten.
The nearest large supermarkets are in Fareham. Tesco has a large store at Fareham Reach, which is only a few minutes by car from Portchester. Asda has a superstore at Fareham, and there is also a Sainsbury's in the town. Lidl and Aldi both have stores in the Fareham area for those who prefer the discount supermarket model. These stores are all easily reached by car from Portchester, with journey times of around five to ten minutes depending on traffic and the exact location.
To the east, Cosham has a Lidl and is on the route towards the large Asda and Tesco stores in the Portsmouth area. The Tesco Extra at North Harbour is a particularly large store with an extensive range, including clothing, electricals and homewares as well as food. For those without a car, reaching the larger supermarkets is more difficult. The bus services from Portchester pass through Fareham and can be used for shopping trips, but carrying a full weekly shop on a bus is not practical for everyone, particularly families or older residents.
Online grocery delivery has become an important option for many Portchester residents. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Ocado all deliver to PO16 postcodes, with delivery slots available throughout the week. This has been particularly valued by those who find it difficult to get to the larger stores, and the service has improved steadily in recent years. Some residents combine online delivery for heavy or bulky items with visits to the Co-op for fresh food and top-ups.
There is also a small number of independent shops in the village, including a newsagent and a butcher, which supplement the Co-op for daily needs. The weekly market, when it runs, provides another option for fresh produce. But for the full supermarket experience with wide aisles, a deli counter and a bakery section, Portchester residents need to head to Fareham. This is a minor inconvenience rather than a serious problem, given the short distance involved, but it is worth knowing if you are considering a move to the village and are used to having a large supermarket on your doorstep.
