The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

Sailing Near Portchester

Leisure

Portchester sits on the northern shore of Portsmouth Harbour, one of the finest natural harbours in the world and a centre for sailing and watersports. The harbour provides sheltered water for dinghy sailing, yacht cruising and racing, and the Solent beyond is one of the busiest and most celebrated sailing waters in Britain.

Portchester Sailing Club is based near the castle and the harbour waterfront. It offers dinghy sailing on the harbour and is a welcoming club for beginners and experienced sailors alike. The club runs racing programmes, social sailing, training courses and events throughout the sailing season. Junior sailing is a particular strength, and the club has introduced many young people to the sport over the years. The sheltered waters of the upper harbour are well suited to learning, with moderate tidal currents and protection from the worst of the weather. The club has launching facilities, a clubhouse and a social programme that extends beyond sailing itself.

For those interested in yacht sailing, the harbour and the Solent offer world-class cruising and racing. Haslar Marina in Gosport, Port Solent near the M27 junction, and numerous other marinas around the harbour provide berths for yachts of all sizes. The Royal Naval Sailing Association (RNSA) and several other yacht clubs operate from around the harbour. Cowes Week, held every August on the Isle of Wight, is the premier event in the British sailing calendar and draws competitors from around the world. Many local sailors participate, and the harbour is alive with activity during the event.

Sailing courses for beginners are available through Portchester Sailing Club and through commercial sailing schools in the wider area. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) accredits training centres that offer structured courses from beginner level through to advanced qualifications, including Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster for those who want to sail offshore. Shore-based theory courses in navigation, meteorology and seamanship are also available through local evening classes and sailing schools.

The harbour is a fascinating place for sailing, with its combination of naval history, working dockyard, passenger ferries and leisure craft all sharing the water. Sailing past the historic ships in the naval base, including HMS Victory in dry dock and the modern warships alongside, is an experience unique to Portsmouth Harbour. The tidal range is significant and the currents can be strong, particularly around the narrow harbour entrance, so local knowledge is important and newcomers should take advice from experienced sailors or instructors.

For those who prefer to watch rather than participate, the harbour waterfront at Portchester provides an excellent vantage point. Sitting on the harbour wall or walking along the shore path, you can watch dinghies racing, yachts heading out to the Solent, ferries crossing to Gosport and naval vessels coming and going. It is a constantly changing scene and one of the pleasures of living in this part of the world.
