Parking in Portchester
Transport
Parking in Portchester is a perennial talking point, particularly around the castle and the village centre. There is no large public car park in the village, which can cause frustration for both visitors and residents, especially at busy times.
Visitors to the castle rely on a small car park near the castle entrance on Castle Street and on-street parking along Castle Street and the surrounding roads. The castle car park has limited spaces and fills up quickly on fine weekends and bank holidays. Castle Street itself is narrow, with room for parking on one side only, and when it is full, cars circle looking for spaces, adding to congestion. Residents in the old village area around Castle Street can find it difficult to park near their own homes when visitor numbers are high, and this has been a source of tension between the needs of tourism and the needs of the people who live there.
Fareham Borough Council manages parking restrictions in the area. Yellow lines are enforced, and vehicles parked illegally risk a penalty charge notice. There are no parking meters in the village.
Portchester Railway Station has a small car park, which is primarily used by commuters during the working week. Spaces are limited and fill up early on weekday mornings, often before eight o'clock. There is no overflow car park at the station, so late arrivals must use nearby residential streets, which is not always welcomed by local residents who find their streets full of commuter cars during the day.
On-street parking in the wider residential areas is generally unrestricted, with no residents' permit scheme currently in place. However, some roads can become congested during school drop-off and pick-up times, particularly around Castle Primary School on Cornaway Lane. Parents are encouraged by the school to walk where possible, but the reality is that many drive, especially those coming from the edges of the village or from outside the catchment.
For visitors planning a trip to the castle, arriving by train is a practical and recommended alternative to driving. Portchester Railway Station is roughly a ten-minute walk from the castle, and the route passes through the village centre where you can pick up refreshments. Bus services also run through Portchester, though they are not as frequent as the train. Cycling is another option, with bike stands available near the castle.
There have been periodic discussions about introducing a larger car park or a residents' parking scheme near the castle, but to date neither has been implemented. The balance between accommodating visitors and preserving the village character is a sensitive one, and any proposal tends to generate strong opinions on both sides.
