The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

Dog Walking in Portchester

Leisure

Portchester is a good place for dog owners, with several routes and open spaces where dogs can be exercised in pleasant, varied surroundings. The combination of harbour-front paths, recreation grounds and quiet residential streets gives dog walkers plenty of options for daily outings.

The harbour path is the most popular dog walking route in the village, stretching for miles along the waterfront in both directions from the castle. It is flat, surfaced and offers interesting smells, sights and sounds for dogs, with the added bonus of harbour views and fresh sea air for their owners. The path runs west through Wicor towards Fareham Creek and east along The Seaward towards Paulsgrove. Dogs must be kept on leads in some sections, particularly where ground-nesting birds or Brent geese are present during the winter months between October and March. The Brent geese are a protected species and disturbance by dogs can cause the flocks to abandon their feeding grounds, so responsible dog ownership is important along the harbour.

Cams Alders Recreation Ground is well used by dog walkers, with enough open space for dogs to run and explore. Some areas of the park may have restrictions during organised sports fixtures, and dogs should always be kept under close control near the children's playground. Wicor Recreation Ground is another popular option, with the added attraction of the harbour shoreline and the mudflats at low tide, which most dogs find fascinating. Be aware that harbour mud is extremely sticky and your dog will need cleaning afterwards.

The residential streets of Portchester are generally quiet enough for a pleasant walk with a dog, particularly the cul-de-sacs and closes away from the main roads. Pavements are well maintained and there are dog waste bins at regular intervals throughout the village.

For longer walks and more adventure, the path towards Fareham Creek and around the Cams Hall estate grounds offers variety, woodland edges and quieter stretches away from the main waterfront. Portsdown Hill, a short drive south of the village, has open chalk grassland where dogs can run freely off lead with extensive views as a reward for the climb.

Dogs are not permitted inside Portchester Castle itself, though English Heritage policy allows registered assistance dogs. The areas around the castle, including the waterfront path and Castle Street, are perfectly fine for dogs on leads and are popular with dog walkers who want to combine exercise with the scenic castle setting.

Fareham Borough Council requires all dog owners to pick up after their dogs in public spaces. Dog waste bins are provided at parks and along the main walking routes. Fixed penalty notices can be issued for failing to clean up, and enforcement officers do patrol. The vast majority of local dog owners are responsible and keep the paths and parks clean.
