Wicor
Waterfront residential area with harbour views and birdwatching
Wicor lies to the west of central Portchester, stretching along the harbour shore towards Fareham. The name is old and appears on early maps of the area. Wicor is best known for its waterfront recreation ground, which offers open green space with views across Portsmouth Harbour towards Gosport and the naval base. The Wicor Path, a footpath running along the shoreline, is popular with walkers, joggers and birdwatchers, and connects through to the Fareham Creek and Cams Alders. The housing here is a mix of 1970s and 1980s estates set back from the shore, generally well maintained and family orientated. Wicor Primary School serves the western end of Portchester. The area has a slightly separate identity from the rest of the village, partly because of its distance from the centre and partly because it looks west towards Fareham rather than east towards the castle. At low tide, the mudflats here attract wading birds including curlew, dunlin and redshank.
