The Castle Village on Portsmouth Harbour

White Hart Lane Area

Eastern residential area bridging Portchester and Paulsgrove

The White Hart Lane area covers the streets to the east of Portchester centre, running towards the boundary with Paulsgrove and the city of Portsmouth. White Hart Lane itself is a residential road connecting the village to the eastern suburbs, and it gives its name to this part of Portchester. The housing is varied, with some older cottages near the western end and larger postwar estates further east. Northern Road, Leith Avenue and the surrounding closes form a grid of quiet suburban streets with a strong community feel. The area is served by a small parade of shops and is within easy reach of the railway station, making it convenient for commuters into Portsmouth or Southampton. A recreation ground at the eastern end provides sports pitches and open space. The boundary between Portchester and Paulsgrove runs through this area, and residents here sometimes feel caught between two identities, though most consider themselves firmly part of Portchester. The White Hart pub, which gave the lane its name, is long gone, but the name endures on maps and road signs.
