Cams Alders
Modern residential area with large recreation ground on former estate land
Cams Alders lies on the western fringe of Portchester, bordering Fareham. The area takes its name from the historic Cams estate, whose parkland once stretched down to the harbour. Today it is divided between residential streets and the large open space of Cams Alders recreation ground, one of the best-equipped parks in the borough. The recreation ground has football pitches, a children's playground, a skate park and a community hall. It is heavily used at weekends and during school holidays. The housing around it dates mainly from the 1980s and 1990s, built on land that was previously part of the Cams Hall estate. Some of the original estate planting survives in the form of mature trees along the boundaries. Cams Hall itself, a fine Georgian house, sits just to the north in Fareham and has been converted into a business centre, but the grounds are partly accessible as a nature area. The residential streets here are wide and generally quiet, with a family-orientated character.
